Designing of thermosetting plastic components for direct screwing

Direct screwing is a very economically
viable joining procedure for
thermosetting plastic mouldings.
However, users do not yet have at
their disposal any guidelines to support
them with regard to the configuration
of the joint. In order to elaborate
initial designing recommendations,
investigations were conducted
into the influences of the screw
and tube geometries. Screws with
cutting elements were easy to screw
into thermosetting plastic moulding
compounds. Moreover, it was possible
to achieve screwing results in a
reliable process using core hole and
outside diameters slightly higher
than those for the direct screwing of
thermoplastics.
