Deformation of pin-like structures in the joining process in order to produce form-fit multimaterial joints

Authors: M. Sc. Michael Wolf, Prof. Dr.-Ing. Dietmar Drummer

Multimaterial combinations are playing an ever more decisive role and posing great challenges for traditional joining procedures. Innovative procedures are necessary in order to extend the material spectrum. Within the framework of the article, a new process route for joining using pin-like structures is presented and the interactions between the process control and the structural deformation are analysed. Purely vibrational movement cannot be used for producing undercuts because of the continuous squeeze flow. On the other hand, infrared preheating of the structure with subsequent frictional relative movement makes it possible to form mechanically durable undercuts in the joining step. In this respect, the deformation is dependent on the preheating time and the joining force.
