Laser transmission welding of thermoplastics at longer wavelengths
Authors: M. Eng. Andreas Schollmayer, B. Eng. Sven Thomas, Prof. Dr.-Ing. Ulrich A. Russek
As far as the laser transmission welding of thermoplastics is concerned, a change from the normally used wavelengths around 1 µm to a longer wavelength around 1.5 µm may reduce any radiation losses which are undesired with regard to process technology and/or increase the radiation intensity in the interaction region. This may lead not only to process control improvements in relation to process technology and economic aspects but also to new product options, as is shown in an experimental study using the example of contour welding.
